    Position Title: Early Education Teaching Assistant (Ages 0–6)
    Reports To: Lead Teacher / Early Learning Program Director
    Location: Portland, Oregon
    Position Type: Full-Time / Hourly (Non-Exempt)


    Position Summary


    The Early Education Teaching Assistant supports the Lead Teacher in providing a nurturing,
    safe, and engaging environment for children ages 0–6. This role assists with lesson
    implementation, supervision, and classroom organization to promote each child’s social,
    emotional, physical, and intellectual growth. The Teaching Assistant helps ensure that all
    children are treated with dignity and respect while upholding the Foundation’s mission to
    nurture children in love, learning, and community.


    Key Responsibilities


    • Assist the Lead Teacher in planning and conducting age-appropriate activities that support developmental milestones and school readiness.

    • Maintain vigilant supervision of children at all times, ensuring safety, positive engagement, and emotional security.

    • Help children with individualized tasks and encourage participation in group activities.

    • Provide extra support for children with developmental or learning challenges.

    • Maintain classroom cleanliness and sanitation. Assist in meal/snack preparation, diapering, and toileting as required.

    • Support the documentation of children’s daily activities, attendance, and progress as directed by the Lead Teacher.

    • Communicate with parents courteously and professionally; refer concerns to the Lead

    • Teacher or Program Director.

    • Participate in staff training, team meetings, and continuing education.

    • Model empathy, kindness, and professionalism consistent with the faith-affirming and inclusive mission of the Multitude of Mercies Foundation.


    Required Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent (CDA or ECE coursework preferred).

    • At least one year of experience working with children in a licensed childcare or preschool setting.

    • Current CPR/First Aid Certification (infant, child, and adult) or willingness to obtain training within 30 days of hire.

    • Food Handler’s Card and Mandatory Reporter Certification (child abuse and neglect training).

    • Ability to assist in recognizing developmental or behavioral concerns and communicate
      observations appropriately.

    • Strong communication, patience, and teamwork skills.

    • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and trauma-informed care.

    Preferred Qualifications


    • CDA (Child Development Associate) Credential or coursework toward an Early

    • Childhood Education degree.

    • Bilingual in English and Spanish or another language common among families served.

    • Experience working with children with special needs or in inclusive early learning settings.

    • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.

    • Frequent standing, walking, bending, sitting on the floor, and playing with children.

    Position Summary

    The Early Education Teacher provides nurturing, developmentally appropriate, and culturally responsive instruction for children ages 0–6 in alignment with the Multitude of Mercies Foundation’s early learning philosophy. This position supports each child’s spiritual, social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth in a safe and inclusive environment. The teacher ensures all classroom activities promote school readiness, family engagement, and early literacy.


    Key Responsibilities

     

    • Plan, implement, and evaluate daily lessons and activities aligned with Oregon Early Learning Standards, Creative Curriculum, and the foundation’s faith-based holistic approach.

    • Observe, assess, and document each child’s progress across developmental domains; identify potential learning delays, disabilities, or behavioral challenges and refer for early intervention when appropriate.

    • Create a nurturing, structured, and engaging classroom that promotes curiosity, cooperation, and respect among children.

    • Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary learning environment. Ensure proper supervision ratios and adhere to DHS and state childcare licensing requirements.

    • Build strong partnerships with parents and guardians through daily communication, progress reports, and family conferences.

    • Maintain confidentiality, ethical standards, and compliance with all agency, state, and federal early childhood regulations.

    • Work collaboratively with assistant teachers, volunteers, and program staff to ensure consistent, high-quality instruction and support services.

    • Model compassion, patience, and care consistent with the Foundation’s mission to nurture children in love, learning, and community service.

     

    Required Qualifications

    • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field (CDA credential acceptable with relevant experience).

    • Current CPR/First Aid Certification (infant, child, and adult).

    • Food Handler’s Card (or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire).

    • Recognized training in recognizing and responding to child abuse and neglect (mandatory reporter certification).

    • Demonstrated ability to identify and support learning disabilities and developmental delays, including use of screening tools such as ASQ, ASQ:SE, or DRDP.

    • Minimum 2 years of classroom teaching experience in an early childhood or preschool setting.

    • Strong interpersonal, communication, and documentation skills.

    • Commitment to equity, cultural responsiveness, and trauma-informed practice.

    Preferred Qualifications

     

    • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Early Childhood Education or Human Development.

    • Bilingual in English and Spanish or other languages commonly spoken by families served.

    • Knowledge of Positive Behavior Support (PBS) and social–emotional learning frameworks (e.g., Conscious Discipline, Second Step).

    • Experience working with children with special needs or Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs).
